Stronger Lungs for our Planet: Amazon Blood Leaf brings Hope
Thu. Jun 23, 2050
Guilherme Almeida
In some ways the region of Pernambuco in Brazil has always been ahead of its time. In 1919 it would be many decades before tackling climate change or global warming would become one of the top priorities for politicians. It was in this year that the mayor of Pernambuco ordered all official vehicles to run on ethanol only.
Ethanol is a by-product of the sugar cane industry. It has long been used in Brazil as a fuel for vehicles. They have used it here as a stand-alone fuel in ethanol-powered cars. In the past the government has also legislated that regular gasoline used in the country has to contain a set percentage of ethanol.
Perhaps it is no surprise then that one of the most important scientific developments of our time sprung from the mind of Dr. Adriana Varela. She was born and raised in Recife, the regionsâ largest city. You can see evidence of her work across millions of acres of trees in the Amazon. She is considered the worldâs foremost genetic engineer and she is the scientist who created the Blood Leaf.
When you fly over the Amazon rainforest today the predominant color you see is not green. It is the coppery-red sheen from the countless leaves that are the signature of Dr.Varela.
Her work in the genetic manipulation of plants and trees may well turn out to be what saves our world. She watched in horror as the billions of tons of carbon dioxide pumped out across the globe each year began to take their toll. The climate was becoming more unstable, extreme weather events were increasing. When the Wetbulb Crisis struck she accelerated her work.
Eight years ago she began introducing her genetically altered plants and trees into the worldâs largest forest. They spread like wildfire because that is what they were designed to do. That their leaves are a different color is what your eye notices. What your eye cannot see is the complex chemical reactions going on inside her creations, reactions that allow them to take up to twenty times more carbon dioxide from the air than normal leaves.
Dr. Varela was at the top of her game already when she began to work on her Blood Leaf project. Then she began to use augmenting technology to push her mind even further. As her abilities progressed she achieved a breakthrough and the idea for engineered flora that could scrub massive quantities of carbon dioxide from the air became a working reality.
Travel to large forests today in many places worldwide and you will see her work continue to grow and spread. An unaltered Amazon forest was already scrubbing a couple of billion tons of carbon dioxide a year from the worldâs air. The problem was, the world was producing over forty billion tons. We had reached the point where even if we had covered every available piece of land in the world with trees, it still would not have absorbed what we were producing.
